I live with my older sister. We are a low income family.  We can't afford a loan  and don't have any extra money to pay back to anyone. We barely make it each month trying to pay electricity  bills etc. Our roof leaks  and we have to take out buckets of water  fron our living room  after a rain.  Is there a grant  that we dont have to pay back  or anyone that can help us?  We cannot  even buy suppliess to fix the roof if we knew how. Thank you anyone can direct us to any help.

Dawn unfortunately there are a lot of people in your same situation. One of the first things you should do is contact your utility company and explain the difficulties you are having. They often have programs that can lower your monthly bill.

Next we would suggest that you contact churches in your area and see if any of them has a ministry offering assistance with repairs. They may also be able to refer you to someone even if they don't do that themselves.

Also search to see if they organization "Rebuilding Together" has a location near you. Their mission is to help people like you and they may be active in your area.

Local agencies receive block grants from the government that are to be used to build up the community and often to help with home repairs. Contact your local housing agency to see if they can provide any suggestions.

Finally see if the article Grants for Home Repairs gives you additional leads. If you are 62 or older and live in a rural area you might be able to find an actual grant for repairs. They are rare but it's worth checking out!
