There are indeed grants for non-profits. Many require that you be an official 501c3 organization as defined by the Internal Revenue Service. You might also check with the federal government's SBA (Small Business Association) . Even though you're not starting a for-profit business they may be able to help you with the counsling and consulting aspect of your project, and it wouldn't cost you anything.
