I am a Vietnam War Veteran interested in starting a new business. Because of the war I became disabled and am classified at the 100% level through the VA. My expertise is in small engine repair and I'd like to open a shop for that. Small engines include snowmobiles, ATVs, chain saws, etc. What help is available for a disabled veteran to start a new business?
It sounds like a microloan may help you best. These loans are less than $50k and usually about $13k for startup business. Interest rates vary by lender but generally are eight to thirteen percent per year. The funds have some restrictions. For example, you cannot use them to pay existing debts or buy real estate. Lenders are specific non-profit and community-based organizations that cooperate with the Small Business Administration. To get in contact with a provider, start at your local SBA district office.

The last one in the list gives a link to an another article with information and help for those with disabilities, including veterans.
Hi, I just thought I'd notify some veterans of the seldom used Aid and Attendance funds. These are funds for the asking if you meet slime very simple qualifications, such as less than $80,000 in assets, and certain disabilities. These disabilities do not have to result form battle, though a vet must have been in active certain dates of war time. I've attached some web sites that can explain it better than me. To start this process go to the county VA office and let them make the application. If you try and do it it can take months to try and untangle the GOVERNMENT process.
You may also benefit from VetBiz.gov which verifies the status of veteran-owned businesses. Those businesses qualify for special VA contracts which can really boost business. For someone like yourself, it may mean early contract work which you can use to eventually become fully independent. Learn more about government contracting.
