Well where do i start? I and my wife of 21 yrs and her sister whom we take care of are in a house in FL. We are on soc.sec. and have a small income. We paid cash for the house with the sale of some land and a mobile home in La. After looking we found this one to be in the best of shape. With that said we need some repairs that are very important, roof, gutters and the master bed rm that leaked durring debbie July 2012. Now we find ourselves in a bad spot.

We need some help but have never asked before and are not sure how. We are not looking for a free ride. We just need some help and can not get any from the finance inst. There is more to the story and understand we are not alone. Please help… feeling alone.

So sorry you are in a tough spot and feeling alone. I totally appreciate that it is difficult to ask for help – we all need help at some point and that is what we are here for. I would recommend the following steps:

  1. Read this article on Grants for Home Repair. There are a number of programs you may be able to take advantage of, from federal agencies to public utilities, and this information can help you find them.
  2. I don't know what Florida county you are in, but there may be local programs that could help you. Do an internet search with the words “home rehabilitation and repair programs” and the name of your county to find them.
  3. The U.S. Dept of Agriculture offers some loans and grants for rural development, especially for seniors. To learn more and see if you are eligible, go to their website at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/HAD-RR_Loans_Grants.html.
  4. Some churches offer volunteer repair services in their communities. You could call the office of churches in your county and see if they provide such a service – they might love to reach out and help you.
